About
Belabbes Benkredda is a civic innovator and entrepreneur working at the intersection of media, democracy, and artificial intelligence. He founded the Munathara Initiative, which has raised $22 million and produced more than 200 live political debates across the Middle East and North Africa. In 2019, he organized the Arab world's first televised presidential debates, viewed by more than 6 million people and hailed as a historic milestone for civil society. His work rests on a simple conviction: the health of democracy depends on the health of our conversations.
At Yale, first as a World Fellow, then as a researcher at the Law School's Information Society Project, he developed a theory for gauging the health of public spheres. With support from Yale Ventures and the National Science Foundation, he is now turning that framework into an AI platform that can monitor public conversations in any forum and any language — an early warning system for public spheres under strain, and a guide to their repair. He has been featured on CNN, BBC, Al Jazeera, and in The New York Times, and is a recipient of the National Democratic Institute's Democracy Award.
An American citizen, a native of Germany, and a son of Algeria, Belabbes is Entrepreneur in Residence at the Jackson School of Global Affairs and a fellow of Pauli Murray College. He lives in New Haven with his wife, Zoe Chance, an author and professor at Yale School of Management.
