About
Mariam El Marakeshy is an award-winning filmmaker, multimedia storyteller, educator, researcher, and cultural specialist whose work spans Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and the United States. A former United Nations staff member, she explores migration, culture, museums, environment, education, and media ethics across her projects.
El Marakeshy has collaborated with National Geographic, ITN UK, USAID, the UN, and numerous NGOs. Her internationally recognized films include Transit and Misafir: A Guest, which draw on original storytelling from the Greek island of Lesvos and Istanbul, alongside multimedia projects and impact media campaigns that have shaped global discussions on migration and belonging.
Her awards include the USA Social Impact Media Award, UN IOM Global Migration Film Award, International Environmental Media Award, London City Film Award, and Romania Cultural Media Award. She is a recognized fellow of New America, Columbia University, and other prestigious programs.
As an educator and cultural specialist, El Marakeshy teaches students and professionals, with her work included in global education curricula. She is the author of the EU Ethical Media Guidelines Report Diversity! and developed the "SuperDiverse Gamekit," a set of innovative games designed to build inclusive environments for migrant children and multicultural learning spaces. She works with museums to design immersive storytelling and educational experiences, and has published on the concept of multiculturalism within museum spaces. She is a UN-accredited intercultural facilitator and has conducted academic research on world cultures in Germany.
