Sevgil Musaieva is a Ukrainian journalist of Crimean Tatar origin and Editor-in-Chief of Ukrainska Pravda, one of Ukraine’s most influential independent media outlets. Known for her principled leadership and commitment to investigative journalism, she has become a prominent voice for press freedom and democratic values during Russia’s war against Ukraine. Born in Uzbekistan, Sevgil returned with her family to Crimea in 1989, where they settled in Kerch after the long exile of Crimean Tatars.
Her career began in Ukrainian business journalism, where she wrote for publications such as Delo, Vlast deneg, and Ekonomichni novyny. From 2011 to 2013, she worked as a correspondent for Forbes Ukraine, focusing on economic and business reporting. In 2014, following Russia’s occupation of Crimea, Sevgil co-founded the civic initiative Krym SOS to support people affected by the annexation. The same year, she launched the online media platform Hubs. In October 2014, she became Editor-in-Chief of Ukrainska Pravda, the influential publication founded by Georgiy Gongadze.
Under her leadership, Ukrainska Pravda expanded its investigative reporting and strengthened its international presence, including the launch of an English-language edition. During the full-scale war, the newsroom has continued reporting from frontline and recently de-occupied territories, documenting war crimes, corruption, and human rights violations. Sevgil is the author of numerous investigations and co-author of a book about Mustafa Dzhemilev, leader of the Crimean Tatar people. She studied at the Institute of Journalism at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, graduating in 2010.
