Description:

International Security Studies and the Brady-Johnson Program in Grand Strategy will host a conversation with Beverly Gage, Professor of History and American Studies at Yale, on her new book, G-Man: J. Edgar Hoover and the Making of the American Century.

Relying on newly available archival sources, Beverly Gage’s biography of FBI director J. Edgar Hoover, the first in nearly thirty years, places Hoover at the center of twentieth-century United States history. Gage shows how Hoover’s tenure as head of the FBI from 1924 to 1972 influenced the rise of the US national security state, Cold War anti-communism, and the coming of Watergate. Indeed, Hoover’s unelected, unchecked power shaped American democracy long after his death in 1972. G-Man has received universal acclaim from reviewers and has been nominated as a finalist for a 2023 PEN America Literary Award and a National Book Critics Circle Award.

The conversation will be moderated by Michael Brenes, Interim Director of the Brady-Johnson Program in Grand Strategy and Lecturer in History.
