India in the World Economy: What Next?

The Jackson School of Global Affairs will host the panel discussion, “India in the World Economy: What Next?” 

Suman Bery, vice-chairman of India’s national government strategic body, is the featured speaker. Discussants include Srinath Raghavan, visiting professor at the Jackson School of Global Affairs and the Yale MacMillan Center, South Asian Studies Council, and Jessica Seddon, a Jackson School Senior Fellow. It will be chaired by David Engerman, Leitner International Interdisciplinary Professor of History and Global Affairs.

At 6-7% growth in 2022, India is one of the world’s fastest growing economies. Many observers expect it, along with a few others, to power the global economy in the coming years. Yet this is far from the first transformation, and the future is far from a certain trajectory.

India today may be celebrated for its young demographics, growing ranks of entrepreneurs, and ability to leverage widespread, cheap broadband for innovative digital public infrastructure and service delivery, but the country’s economy has transformed itself at least a few times since independence. Looking ahead, there are headwinds as well as tailwinds. The country’s new growth model will be tested by environmental change, shifting geopolitics and global financial fragility. Speakers will discuss some of the challenges facing economic managers in the country.
