Akila Shanmugham (BK’20) is from Downers Grove, Illinois and is currently pursuing a degree in Global Affairs. Her primary academic interests include post-colonial development in South Asia and the impact of public health policy on low-income families. At Yale, Akila is the Co-Conference Director of Yale UNICEF, where she assists in creating and managing the annual conference concerning childhood development. She is also the sponsorship and operations director for BulldogHacks, which organizes hackathons committed to addressing health disparities, and a member of the all-female jazz and swing a cappella group Proof of the Pudding. Last summer, she interned at the public health nonprofit Peer Health Exchange, which trains college students to implement health workshops in underprivileged high schools. This experience has contributed to her interest in pursuing a postgraduate career in the international public health nonprofit sector.
