🇳🇵This summer, #YaleJackson MPP student Austin Bodetti spent six weeks in the Kathmandu Valley interning with Inclusion Economics Nepal (IEN), a research group affiliated with Yale Inclusion Economics. His work included promoting YIE`s programs to elect more Nepali women to local office; he interviewed female members of parliament, including Maoist MP Kalpana Miya Kusari and former foreign minister Bimala Rai Paudyal, and wrote op-eds on IEN`s behalf. Austin also spent a week with Inclusion Economics India Centre (IEIC) in the northeast Indian state of Meghalaya, where he investigated the effectiveness of a government anti-deforestation program.
"I`m still far from an economist, but I discovered that I loved working in the field—which wouldn`t have been possible without Jackson and Yale."

This summer, Yale Jackson MPP student Michael Henry interned with Seedstars Africa Ventures in Kenya — a hands-on opportunity to test his career pivot from nonprofit international development, where he had spent seven years before enrolling at Jackson, to impact investing. He gained exposure to the full venture capital (VC) lifecycle: meeting and evaluating startups, conducting due diligence, supporting portfolio growth, and helping raise capital from institutional investors.
Michael also participated in VivaTech — Europe’s largest tech conference, with a growing African focus — alongside Jackson alum Fanta Traoré, and enjoyed exploring Paris with his classmates. He witnessed the specific dynamics of African VC, where innovative startups have the potential to transform lives at scale but often face steep resource constraints. The experience deepened his interest in impact finance, which he planned to explore further at Yale.
“While interning at a large, globally recognized organization is a strong way to build one’s career, I’ve benefited from a different strategy this summer. Integrating with a nimble five-person team managing $80 million has given me access to every aspect of their work and accelerated my learning much faster than a single project-based internship would have.”

🤙 For his summer internship, Yale Jackson MPP student Pranav Pattatathunaduvil interned in Hawaii with the Commander’s Action Group at U.S. Indo-Pacific Command (INDOPACOM), serving as a Defense Innovation Unit Summer Fellow. Under the leadership of Admiral Samuel Paparo, INDOPACOM oversees U.S. military operations and partnerships across the Indo-Pacific.
Pranav wrote analytical memos for Admiral Paparo that focused on how the Chinese People’s Liberation Army is making progress towards its strategic priorities using less advanced chips and AI models. This work involved extensive interviews with officials across the command, and the final memos included proposals for adapting U.S. semiconductor export controls, as well as recommendations to improve INDOPACOM’s AI initiatives. Pranav also supported logistics for Admiral Paparo’s key leader engagements and for the INDOPACOM Commander’s Conference, which brought together senior military leaders to shape regional security strategy. After his internship, Pranav traveled to India to conduct interviews with government officials and startup founders for his summer research project as a student in the Yale Grand Strategy program, focusing on “Analyzing India’s Role in the U.S.-China Tech Competition.”

🇬🇧 For his summer internship, Yale Jackson MPP student Dan Kent worked at the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change (TBI) in London, specifically with the Global Tech Partnerships team, which collaborated with governments and technology partners around the world to develop solutions to major public sector challenges. Dan focused on two main areas: partnerships-wide analysis and strategy, and further development of a specific partner tech offering.
Alongside the internship, he enjoyed some quintessential UK moments — from Loch Ness and Stonehenge to pints with fellow Jackson students.
“It was a great moment to join TBI. The organization is growing fast and engaging in tons of exciting projects around the world. Working with different individuals and functions across the organization was a fantastic learning experience that I’m sure I will draw from wherever I land after Yale.”

#YaleJackson MPP student Walid Herzallah completed a 10-week internship with the Global Health & Wellbeing team at San Francisco-based Open Philanthropy, a philanthropic funder and advisor that has directed over $4 billion in grants since 2011. The organization maintained a rigorous focus on evidence and cost-effectiveness as part of its mission to help others as much as possible with the resources available to its funders and partners. Walid’s internship focused on evaluating two separate interventions – one in maternal health and another in information and communication technology – through literature reviews, expert interviews, and modeling of Social Return on Investment (SROI).
“I love that Open Philanthropy focuses on maximizing impact per dollar – with impact being ‘lives saved’ and ‘income gains’ – regardless of the sector or intervention. But this raises some interesting ethical questions about moral weights when comparing different interventions. For example, how do you weigh doubling the incomes of several people living in extreme poverty against saving a single life from a preventable disease? There are no easy answers, but tools from economics, science, and philosophy can help us make well-grounded decisions.”

For his summer internship, #YaleJackson MPP student Cheney Wen interned at the @cfr_org in Washington, D.C. with Rush Doshi, C.V. Starr Senior Fellow for Asia Studies and director of the China Strategy Initiative. Drawing on his experience as a former foreign affairs staff member for Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te, Cheney focused his research on the evolving cross-strait and foreign policy positions of Taiwan’s Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), as well as their implications for the future of Taiwan-U.S.-China relations.
Cheney’s work included in-depth reviews of political memoirs, news coverage, and policy materials, complemented by regular discussions with Doshi – formerly the director for China and Taiwan on President Biden’s National Security Council – on strategic challenges facing Taiwan. Cheney also engaged in CFR programming, built connections with interns and researchers across departments, and developed skills in research, writing, and public speaking. He also had the chance to meet Mike Froman, president of the Council on Foreign Relations (see photo 2). He hoped this experience would inform and strengthen his future contributions to Taiwan’s foreign policy.
"As an aspiring foreign policymaker in Taiwan, I am confident that my CFR internship experience would inform my future service in the Taiwan government, strengthening my capacity to help my country navigate the increasingly turbulent international landscape."
