MAS Admissions

The short answer is: with you in mind.

First and foremost, we endeavor to have a learning community of the backgrounds, perspectives, points of view, and global talent that you would choose yourself. Without question, a lot of learning happens from your peers.

Second, we try to be core only to what will be used in the evaluation. We do a lot of analysis to understand and confirm what is most predictive of success in our program, and only ask for those materials. One place you will certainly notice this in the application is in the essay. Although there is much we could ask and would like to know about you, if it’s merely a “nice to have” or not data supported, then we don’t ask it.

Third, we strive to be fair. To that end, we evaluate candidates with a set rubric, ask standardized questions, and ask committee members to participate in bias awareness training. This is also why the application is holistic. We know that the application will be an incomplete glimpse into who you are, and seek to understand your individual context. We try to have multiple data points and then look at all the information available in a careful and nuanced way to get the best sense of who you are as an individual. Again, context matters, and you should see ample places for you to tell us your context if there is some.

We have tried to create an application that gives you an opportunity to share who you are and what matters most to you, while also recognizing that the application will give us only a partial and incomplete glimpse into you. No single data point is determinative in this process, and in fact, the same data point can have different meanings based on the other elements of your application and the overall context surrounding your candidacy.

Because of these realities, the Admissions Committee seeks to gain the fullest understanding of you possible within the structure of the application process. Elements of your personal background may provide crucial insights into the choices and opportunities that have shaped your academic, professional, and personal experiences. We welcome whatever aspects of this background you’re comfortable sharing with us.

Our hope is that this Application Guide provides useful insights and advice as you prepare your Yale Jackson application!

Unless you’re a college senior, your academic record is largely fixed by now, and your focus now is on sharing your transcripts with us as part of your application.

• We don’t need verified transcripts at this point, but do ask for transcripts for every course you took for degree credit including study abroad, transfer credits, community college, summer courses, etc. Missing and incomplete transcripts are a major reason for delays in application review. To apply, you can submit either a copy of a physical transcript or a comprehensive electronic transcript; we’ll require your official transcript only when you enroll. However, if your transcript is in a language other than English, we ask that you provide both the original language version and an English translation.
• Transcripts come in many variations, but please make sure that what you submit includes: your name, the institution name, course names and grades, and confirmation of the degree conferred. If there are any additional pages (comments, grading scale, etc.), include those, too.
• Although many applicants will have some exposure to economics, statistics, and calculus, there is no required course of study to be eligible for admission. The admissions committee values diverse backgrounds, including academic studies in the arts, sciences, and humanities. That said, some of the coursework at Yale Jackson is quantitative in nature, and candidates can demonstrate a readiness for this through undergraduate study, non-degree classes, the GRE, and professional work. There are many free and accessible options for addressing gaps, and we leave it to candidates to determine what is best for them.

Resume

Your resume is an opportunity to present a concise overview of your professional experience, academic background, and any volunteer work, activities, or other interests that help to tell your story. You are welcome to use the resume format of your choosing. Unless you have more than ten years of work experience, we advise that your resume be limited to one page. This will help you to focus on your accomplishments in the most persuasive way. Oftentimes in career searches, we use resumes that highlight job functions and key responsibilities. However, the most helpful resume for your application will be one that focuses on accomplishments, achievements, and the value you add.

The resume is your opportunity to advocate for yourself. Although you should not exaggerate, highlighting your role in an accomplishment is not boasting. Begin bullets with active verbs such as “led” or “created” to demonstrate the impact and results you drove in each of your roles. In particular, you may want to show where you have had leadership experience, global engagement, and evidence of strategic thinking.

If possible, quantify results and be specific about percentage improvements, financial cost savings, increased operational efficiency, and other quantifiable metrics. When you can’t quantify, qualify. For example, sharing that you, “Created a monthly learning seminar that increased collaboration between government and citizen stakeholders” or “Developed a proposal to refocus senior leadership time with key partners” could give the Committee a sense of results that cannot necessarily be described in numbers.

Although not a major component of the resume, it is common to list a few activities on the resume. This could include extracurricular activities, sports, volunteer work, research/academic activities, employment or work-study during school, familial roles or responsibilities, professional affiliations, or hobbies. Please feel free to put a brief amount of these details on your resume.

More is not always better, and having unique hobbies and interests is not necessarily the goal. Focus on what’s most significant and where you have engaged most deeply. And if your jobs, courses of study, and life circumstances have limited your capacity to take on these kinds of outside activities, you will not be disadvantaged in the application process.

Work experience

The Work Experience section of the application contains space for you to provide contextual information about your professional experience, including descriptions about your company, your role, your reasons for leaving, gaps in experience, and other information. More than just a restatement of your resume, the details in this section help the Admissions Committee to better understand your trajectory, narrative, and career impacts.

Candidates frequently worry that they will be at a disadvantage in the application process if they have employment gaps, career tangents, or non-traditional work. The reasons can vary from individual to individual. Industry disruptions, strategic development, trailing partners, and more are just some of the explanations. We want to know your story and evaluate your application with that context.

The Work Experience section should only include full-time, post-undergraduate professional experience. Any internships, work during college, or part-time work should only appear in your resume.

Career goals

While some students are looking to accelerate their current career path in a post-graduate school role, many students use the time to explore new career possibilities, whether that means pivoting to a new sector, industry, or function, or changing geographic focus. You’re not expected to have it all figured out before arriving, and don’t need to pretend that you’re more certain than you actually are. However, it is important to have developed some ideas about your career interests and goals, and how to best position yourself to pursue those.

In this section, let us know the sector, industry, and function that is of greatest interest to you in the short-term (the first three years immediately after graduating) and long-term, and then briefly describe how you will position yourself to pursue them. Whatever your career goals, we promise we won’t hold you to it! We don’t have quotas by sector or industry, nor do we craft a class with a particular mix in mind. We care more about your thought process and what you’ve done already to develop them.

We require at least one academic, one professional recommendation, and a third one of your choice.

Give your recommenders plenty of time to write on your behalf. Ideally, you should identify who you want to write your recommendations and ask them to do so at least a month before the application deadline, so that they have plenty of time to write a reference. Even better is to allow enough time talk with them about your graduate school plans, reflect together on growth experiences, and discuss why this next step is important.

You should have no role in writing or submitting your recommendations. We know that your recommenders are busy, and they may ask your assistance in drafting a letter for their review. Please resist this pressure, even if it means you need to ask someone else instead. An authentic letter coming from an individual who is familiar with your work will always be the better option than a letter that was not wholly written by an independent source. In addition to not drafting the letter, you should take care not to share written application materials such as your essays with them either, so that they do not inadvertently incorporate your words into their recommendations.

Finally, while all letters must be written in English, we encourage you to find recommenders who can best speak to your past experiences, regardless of their English language fluency. We will evaluate only the substance of the recommendations, not the proficiency of the language used. Your recommenders may choose either to write their letters in English or to write in their native language and use one of the many free translation programs available.

Academic references

An academic recommendation is an important window into understanding your history of research, writing, analysis, and learning. Whether this is part of what you do professionally, you may want to go back to a professor from university. The best letters are written by people who have taught or supervised you in an academic setting and know you well. Peers, subordinates, and mentors often do not know enough about your assignments to speak with clarity and substance. Although senior administrators and those with impressive titles can speak to your network, they rarely know the specifics about your classroom, lab, and academic engagements that make recommendations meaningful. If you have lost contact with former professors, they have moved on, or it is too far in the past for them to remember you, you can ask one of your professional recommenders to speak to your academic skills such as research, writing, and analysis.

Professional references

A professional recommendation is an important window into understanding your career impacts and how you have led and collaborated within a sector, industry, or organization. The best letters are written by people who have worked with you and who know you well and, in particular, a current or former supervisor. Peers, subordinates, and mentors often do not know enough about your assignments to speak with clarity and substance. Although senior level leaders and those with impressive titles can speak to your network, they rarely know the specifics about your work that make recommendations meaningful. Start with a current supervisor.

If your supervisor is a family member, you are an entrepreneur, or you haven’t told your supervisor that you are considering leaving to pursue graduate school, then try a former supervisor. When a former supervisor is not possible, the next best references typically comes from a funder/investor, board member, or client. The thought is the same. You want your writer to be someone who has worked with you and knows you well. Even if you have known that person for a short amount of time in total, if you worked together daily, they’ll likely be able to write persuasively about your impacts.

Statement of purpose

We want to know what matters to you. Depending on how you respond, the question seeks to gain insight into your background, passions, motivations, and/or ideals. In answering the prompt, think about the life experiences that have been most meaningful to you. This can be personal or professional, recent or long-standing. However, a specific example from the past is key. Writing in generalities or about future goals will not give the committee what they need.

The essay may be one of the first things you start but last things you finish before submitting your application. That’s OK, but be sure to spend time thinking about what you’ll write and work through the writing process far enough in advance of the deadline that you’re not scrambling to put your ideas into words as the deadline’s approaching. This is not a creative writing program, so you don’t need to spend an excessive amount of time with the finer points of every linguistic turn of phrase but, as with the other elements of the application, you don’t want to feel rushed.

The word limit (though not necessarily the goal) is 500 words.

Optional information

The Optional Information section is truly optional. It is not an additional required essay. If no aspect of your application requires further explanation, then you should leave this section blank, which is what most candidates (appropriately) do.  

Our hope is that we have constructed an application that provides the information needed from the required components of your application. However, if you think the Admissions Committee would benefit from a brief explanation regarding any aspect of your application, you may provide it in the Optional Information section. Your general approach should be that, if there is something you feel is material to your candidacy that you are not able to include in another section of the application, then put it here.

The most common reasons we see optional information include: context that explains a poor academic performance or unusual career trajectory, and concrete steps taken to mitigate a weaker element of your application.

Interview

About 10-15% of candidates will complete an interview. Interviews are offered by invitation on a rolling basis throughout the admissions review process. We appreciate your patience if an invitation to interview does not come immediately. It takes the whole review period for the Admissions Committee to read all of the applications, and naturally some applications come to committee before others.

If you receive an invitation, it will be an offer to participate in a 30-minute virtual interview with an alumnus. The interview is "blind," meaning that both you and the alumnus will know very little about the other beyond what you share with one another.

As you may already be aware, we conduct reverse interviews, meaning that the candidate is the interviewer. This is an opportunity for you to talk with an alumnus about their experience at Yale Jackson and subsequent path. So come with your best questions! Like any good conversation, though, try to leave time for both parties to ask questions and speak.

The interview is optional. Not everyone who is admitted completes an interview. If you feel that your application is complete without the interview, you are not looking for an alumni connection, or the timing does not work, then you may decline the interview. For candidates who complete an interview, we do ask the alumnus for their input after the conversation. Mostly, though, we hope that this is a valuable interaction for you!

Conclusion

We think there is a lot of value in starting the admissions process early. Certainly it gives you more time to prepare an application, but it also gives you more time to reflect on your goals, consider the training and network needed to get there, and engage with mentors and others who can offer advice. We encourage you to approach this process in the spirit of reflection and self-discovery, looking to know more about yourself at the end of the journey than you did when it began.

As such, we try to construct an application that contributes to a reflective journey. We ask you to talk with supervisors, mentors, faculty, and others who might write a recommendation. You review coursework and quantitative concepts to demonstrate academic preparedness, and you will share something with us about your background, passions, motivations, and/or ideals through an essay.

Getting to this point in the process involves a lot of time, effort, money, and energy, so all submitted applications will be reviewed. However, candidates cannot be admitted without completing all of the required components. If there is something missing, we will flag that on your status page and/or contact you for more information. We encourage you to check your status page throughout the process.

Hopefully just completing this part of the process has yielded benefits in terms of clarifying your values, priorities, and aspirations that will guide you through school and beyond. Regardless of what happens, you should congratulate yourself on getting to this point!

On our side, we will treat your application with the same care that you put into preparing it. The process itself is highly individualized. Each piece of information is considered within the context of that candidate. So do your best with each part of the application, but the key is to remain your true self throughout. What the Admissions Committee is looking to learn about in your application is...you!

Cost of Attendance 

For the academic year 2026-2027, the tuition for full-time study programs at the Yale Jackson School of Global Affairs is $65,100. 

The following estimations for the cost of living in New Haven for the 2026-2027 academic year are made available as a general reference for graduate students. These figures are used by the Office of Financial Aid to calculate financial need as required by certain funding sources. The figures include housing and food, transportation, personal expenses, and academic expenses excluding tuition.

Loans are available to enrolled US students by application through the Jackson School Loan Form. 

This form can only be accessed via single sign-on, so a NETID and password is required. 

Federal Student Loans

There have been some recent changes to federal loans effective July 1, 2026. The university has provided this webpage outlining alternatives and options as a resource. Yale's Graduate & Professional Student Loan Option | University Financial Aid

Graduate federal loans are fixed‑rate loans funded by the U.S. government for eligible graduate and professional students. Beginning in 2026–27, these loans primarily consist of Direct Unsubsidized Loans, which allow up to $20,500 per year in borrowing. They require completion of the FAFSA, accrue interest while you are in school, and offer multiple repayment plan options. Students can apply for the FAFSA at: https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa and review current interest rates, loan fees, and repayment plans at: https://studentaid.gov/understand-aid/types/loans/interest-rates.

Private Student Loans

We encourage all international students to look for sources of funding in their home countries.

Domestic and International Students can apply for private loans through the ELMSelect website. ELMSelect provides a comparison of different lenders, which you can use to evaluate lenders and select one that suits your loan needs. This is not a list of recommended lenders but rather a list of those lenders used by Yale students over the past three years.

Satisfactory Academic Progress and Program Completion

All degree-seeking students in the Jackson School of Global Affairs must maintain satisfactory academic progress (SAP) to be eligible for any type of institutional or Title IV financial aid, including Federal Direct Stafford Loans (unsubsidized), Graduate PLUS Loans, and Federal Work-Study. The following provisions define satisfactory academic progress.

Qualitative Measure

• Students must maintain the minimum cumulative academic standard defined by the Jackson School as High Pass (HP), as recorded on the official academic transcript. This standard represents acceptable academic standing for graduate-level coursework.
• Students must earn grades of Pass (P) or higher in all attempted coursework.
• Students must meet required Honors (H) milestones consistent with program standards:
  1. At least one grade of Honors (H) must be earned by the end of the first year.
  2. A minimum of two grades of Honors (H) must be earned overall.

Quantitative Measure

Students must maintain a pace of completion of at least 67 percent of cumulative attempted courses. Pace is calculated as successfully completed courses divided by attempted courses. A successfully completed course is one in which a grade of H, HP, P, or SAT (as defined by the program) is earned. Withdrawals (W), Failures (F), Incompletes (I), and Unsatisfactory (UNSAT) grades are counted as attempted but not completed.

Treatment of Specific Grades and Credit Types

• Courses graded Audit (AUD) and Credit Waivers (CRW) do not count toward SAP, as they do not carry earned credit.
• Withdrawals (W) count as attempted but not earned credits in the pace calculation.
• Incompletes (I) count as attempted credits in the quantitative measure. They are evaluated based on the final grade once resolved; until then, they are considered attempted but not earned.

Repeated Courses 

All attempts of a repeated course are included in both the quantitative (pace) calculation and qualitative SAP standards.

Transfer Credits 

Transfer credits are not accepted by the Jackson School.

Remedial Coursework 

Remedial coursework is not accepted by the Jackson School.

Maximum Timeframe 

Students must complete their program within 150 percent of the published program length.

Program Lengths

• Standard length, one-year program: two semesters; maximum timeframe: three semesters
• Standard length, two-year program: four semesters; maximum timeframe: six semesters

Students are required to complete their program within 150 percent of the published length, excluding approved leaves of absence of up to one year.

SAP Evaluations Schedule

SAP is evaluated according to the standard schedule below. However, students who do not meet specific departmental provisions outlined in the Jackson School programs and academic policies may be subject to an end-of-term review. Additionally, students on SAP plans or financial aid probation are reviewed at the end of each term to assess compliance with their approved appeal conditions.

• One-year programs: evaluated at the end of each term
• Two-year programs: evaluated at the end of each term

Academic dismissal results in the immediate loss of Title IV federal financial aid eligibility.

Notifications

Students are notified via their university email when changes to SAP status affect financial aid eligibility. Notifications include instructions on appealing an unsatisfactory-academic-progress determination and applicable deadlines. Notifications are sent no later than fourteen days following the SAP evaluation. The Jackson School does not offer a financial-aid-warning period.

Appealing Unsatisfactory Academic Progress

Students who fail to meet SAP standards may appeal to regain eligibility. Appeals must be submitted to the assistant dean for graduate education no later than two weeks prior to the start of the next term to avoid delays in financial aid processing. Appeals must:

• Explain the circumstances that affected academic performance,
• Describe how those circumstances have been resolved, and
• Include supporting documentation.

Students with approved appeals may be placed on financial-aid probation for one evaluation period or on an academic plan. Continued eligibility depends on meeting SAP standards or the conditions outlined in the academic plan.

Regaining Eligibility Without an Appeal

Students who do not appeal, or whose appeals are denied, may regain eligibility by enrolling without federal aid and meeting all SAP standards.

No. You can apply to only one degree program per academic year.

No. All degree programs are full-time and residential.

Applicants whose native language is English or who attended a university for at least two years, full-time, residential, where English was the language of instruction, may be exempt from submitting an English language test. The application will help candidates determine whether this pertains to them. Candidates who are required to submit an English language test may choose from the Cambridge English, Duolingo, IELTS, or TOEFL. The recommended minimums are 193 CAE, 90 DET, 7.0 IELTS, 102 TOEFL iBT, and 610 TOEFL PBT. We will consider applications with lower scores if there is additional evidence of English mastery. Tests are valid for 5 years from the test date to the date when you submit your application.

MAS students are not eligible for a Jackson School scholarship.

Yes, in fact, we require you update us if there are changes to your application. After submitting your application by the materials deadline listed in the instructions, your status portal will include a short form that can be used to provide updates anytime until your application is decisioned. Any material changes must be communicated via the form immediately from the time you submit your application through the first day of classes. This includes but is not limited to: completing an academic course or degree, receiving a test score, changing jobs, or taking on a different professional role than what you submitted in your application. Failing to update the Admissions Committee of a material change could result in a rescinded offer.

You will receive a notification email by the decision release date published in the instructions section of the application. This is the deadline by which decisions will be released, but the committee may also send decisions before this date. The email will instruct you to check your Application Status Portal.

First, thank you for your continued commitment to Yale Jackson School! We try to streamline the re-application process as much as possible in the hope that you can focus on updating the one or two areas that you can best improve. As long as these materials are still valid, you may resubmit the same transcripts, tests, and recommendations (there is an option to port them from the previous cycle). If the essay question has not changed, you may reuse that, too. Some of the application fields will carry over, too, but go through each section carefully to confirm everything is correct.
