About

Ian Shapiro is a leading scholar of democracy, justice, and political theory. A native of South Africa, he earned both his J.D. from Yale Law School and his Ph.D. in Political Science from Yale, where he has taught since 1984. He served as chair of the Political Science Department from 1999 to 2004 and as Henry R. Luce Director of the MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies from 2004 to 2019. Shapiro is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Philosophical Society and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. His books include Politics Against Domination, Responsible Parties, The Wolf at the Door, and Uncommon Sense. His current research examines the relationship between democracy, economic inequality, and the causes and consequences of populist politics.
