About
Jean-Paul Chretien is director of the Big-if-True Science Accelerator (BiTS) at Renaissance Philanthropy, where he helps scientists and technologists develop ambitious ideas into high-impact research programs.
A physician and former U.S. Navy officer, he served 20 years on active duty, including as a program manager at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), where he led efforts to develop advanced medical technologies. He previously headed the Department of Defense Pandemic Warning Team during the emergence of COVID-19, served as senior policy advisor for biodefense at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, and led innovation initiatives at the Armed Forces Health Surveillance Center.
His career has focused on biodefense, pandemic preparedness, global health security, and emerging infectious diseases, including overseeing health protection for U.S. and NATO personnel in Afghanistan. He has been recognized by Fortune and the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation for his contributions to public service and health innovation.
