About

Odd Arne Westad is one of the world's leading historians of modern international relations, the Cold War, and East Asia. Originally from Norway, he studied history, philosophy, and modern languages before earning a graduate degree in U.S. and international history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Westad has authored or edited 18 books, including The Global Cold War, Restless Empire, and The Cold War: A World History, which have reshaped our understanding of global conflict, empire, and China's rise. His wider scholarship examines the history of modern China, Sino-Russian relations, imperialism, and post-colonial global history. At Yale, he teaches in the History Department and the Jackson School of Global Affairs. He also directs Yale Law School’s Paul Tsai China Center and co-directs the Johnson Center for the Study of American Diplomacy. He is a fellow of the British Academy and a visiting professor at Peking University.
