About

Stephen DeCasien is an ancient historian and nautical archaeologist specializing in Mediterranean naval warfare and maritime technology. At Yale, Stephen will be working on his book, co-edited with William M. Murray, Professor Emeritus at the University of South Florida, titled The Naval Rams from the Battle of the Egadi (Aegates) Islands in 241 BCE. The book presents archaeological evidence recovered from the first securely identified ancient naval battlefield and examines Roman and Carthaginian naval logistics and maritime power.

Stephen’s research has appeared in the International Journal of Nautical Archaeology, Journal of Archaeological Science, and Journal of Ancient History, among others. Before Yale, Stephen worked in Chinese academia, where he promoted comparative and global approaches to ancient seafaring. His archaeological fieldwork includes the Battle of the Egadi Islands in Sicily and Octavian’s victory monument at Actium in Greece.
