Description:
International Security Studies presents a conversation with historian Michael Franczak. In his new book, Global Inequality and American Foreign Policy in the 1970s (Cornell University Press), Franczak demonstrates how Third World solidarity around the New International Economic Order (NIEO) forced US presidents to consolidate American hegemony over an international economic order. Using newly available archival sources, as well as interviews with key administration officials, he reveals how the NIEO and “North-South dialogue” negotiations brought global inequality to the forefront of US national security.
Franczak is a historian of US foreign relations and the world economy and an expert on global climate change policy and negotiations. He is currently a Research Fellow in the Division of Peace, Climate, and Sustainable Development at the International Peace Institute. The event will be moderated by Michael Brenes, co-Director of the Brady-Johnson Program in Grand Strategy.
