Join the Brady-Johnson Program in Grand Strategy for a conversation with political scientist Van Jackson. Moderated by Grand Strategy Co-Director Michael Brenes, the discussion will focus on Jackson’s new book, Grand Strategies of the Left: The Foreign Policy of Progressive Worldmaking (2024), the future of China and the Indo-Pacific, alternatives to great-power competition, and a “grand strategy for peace.” The conversation will also cover Jackson’s transition to academia following several years in the Department of Defense.

Jackson is scholar of international relations specializing in East Asian and Pacific security, critical analysis of defense issues, and the intersection of working-class interests with foreign policy. He is a Senior Lecturer in International Relations at Victoria University of Wellington, and a Senior Research Scholar at Security in Context. Jackson began his career in the U.S. Air Force as a Korean linguist and intelligence analyst. He holds several concurrent think tank appointments and has appeared widely in the media, including on The Majority Report with Sam Seder, HBO’s Vice News Tonight, CNN, and BBC Radio. His writing has been featured in Dissent, The Nation, New York Times, Washington Post, and The Atlantic, among others.
