Description:

International Security Studies will host historian Jonathan R. Hunt for a discussion on his new book, The Nuclear Club: How America and the World Policed the Atom from Hiroshima to Vietnam (Stanford University Press, 2022). The Nuclear Club reveals how a coalition of powerful and developing states embraced global governance in hopes of a bright and peaceful tomorrow. Today the nuclear order legitimizes foreign intervention worldwide, empowering the nuclear club and, above all, the United States, to push sanctions and even preventive war against atomic outlaws.

A global historian specializing in nuclear security, U.S. foreign policy, and the Cold War, Hunt is Assistant Professor of Strategy at the United States Naval War College. He has previously taught at the U.S. Air War College and the University of Southampton. In addition to The Nuclear Club, his publications include The Reagan Moment: America and the World in the 1980s (Cornell University Press, 2021), co-edited with Simon Miles.
