Description:
International Security Studies continues its Spring 2024 Colloquium Series with a presentation by Nataliia Laas, a Henry Chauncey ‘57 Postdoctoral Fellow in the Brady-Johnson Program in Grand Strategy. She will present the proposal for her book manuscript, A Soviet Consumer Republic: Environmental Citizenship and the Economy of Waste in the Post-WWII Soviet Union. The project examines Soviet consumption and the relationship between the state and consumers as an economy of overproduction and waste. It sheds new light on crucial commonalities between socialist and capitalist economic systems in generating wasted goods and wastefulness.
A specialist in political economy, consumer society, gender, the history of the social sciences, and environmental history in the Soviet Union, Laas often provides commentary on current affairs in Eastern Europe, Russia, and Ukraine. She received her PhD in History from Brandeis University and previously held a postdoctoral fellowship at the Jordan Center for the Advanced Study of Russia at New York University.
This event is open to the Yale community; lunch will be provided. Please register to receive the reading materials for this colloquium.
