Africa and the Russian Invasion of Ukraine: Challenges and Lessons for the Future

African states have engaged on the Russia-Ukraine conflict in ways that reveal the diversity of their perspectives and the different strategies they employ as they navigate their relationships with the global powers. How has this conflict and the economic crisis it engendered shaped Africa’s diplomatic outlook in an increasingly polarized international order? How does it foreshadow Africa’s future role in global affairs?

Speakers include Asha Castleberry-Hernandez, Senior Advisor, Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs, US Department of State, and Ambassador Martin Kimani, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Kenya to the United Nations. Jackson Senior Fellow Amb. Bisa Williams will moderate.

This roundtable marks the launch of the International Security Studies Africa Security Program, a forum for scholarly engagement and multidisciplinary research on the strategic role of Africa in global affairs and the sources, dynamics, and consequences of security challenges in Africa.
