Many of our M.P.P. students receive some level of fellowship support from the Jackson Institute or other sources at Yale.

These fellowships cover all or a portion of the cost of tuition. Some fellowships also provide a stipend for living expenses. Applicants for admission to our M.P.P. program will be considered for all Jackson Institute administered fellowships for which they are eligible when they indicate ‘Yes’ to the application question ‘Applying for Yale Financial Assistance’. Unless otherwise noted no separate application is required.

General Merit Fellowships

These fellowships are awarded to incoming students based on academic promise and merit. Typical levels of fellowships range from half to full tuition, with some also providing a stipend for living expenses. Funding for general merit fellowships is provided by the following:

International Fellowships

In addition to academic merit, some Jackson Institute Fellowships are also awarded based on a student’s country of origin.

• Pierre Keller Fellowship: Awarded to an incoming student from a European country with a strong preference for a student from Switzerland. Provides funding toward tuition.
• Kwok Fellowship (or Yale Kwok Scholarship) for Graduate Students from Hong Kong or mainland China: Awarded to a student from Hong Kong and/or mainland China. Read more about Kwok Scholars.
• Russian Fellowship for Graduate Students at the Jackson Institute for Global Affairs: Awarded to an incoming student from Russia.
• Lei Zhang Fellowship: Awarded to a student from China.
• Peel Fellowship Fund at the Jackson Institute for Global Affairs: Awarded to an incoming student(s) who are residents of countries within Sub-Saharan Africa.
• Chang Fellowship: Awarded to an incoming student(s) with preference given to residents of countries within Africa or students who have shown a demonstrated interest in Africa

Service Fellowships

• C.E. and S. Foundation Military or Other National Service Fellowship: Awarded to a current or recent ranking military officer or a civilian with impressive national service experience.
• Paul D. Coverdell Fellows Program: Awarded to Returned Peace Corps Volunteers who apply as a Coverdell Fellow. To be considered, interested RPCVs upload a 500 word-max Peace Corps Fellowship Statement to the online application, indicating how the fellowship fits into their academic and professional plans, and how they plan to fulfill the Coverdell internship requirement. Fellows at Jackson receive a minimum award of full tuition and complete a degree-related internship in an underserved American community. Summer Funding

The Jackson Institute provides summer travel grants to all first-year students with viable projects. Grants may support unpaid internships, independent research projects and language study.

Fellowships for Joint Degrees

Joint degree students are eligible for the same fellowships as other Jackson M.P.P. students (listed above) while enrolled in the Graduate School of the Arts and Sciences (3 semesters). Funding sources for the semesters enrolled at the professional school should be discussed with the appropriate advisors and administrators in the professional school.

• Henry Hart Rice Foreign Graduate Fellowship: Preference is to award this to a student from a former communist country. The MacMillan Center administers these awards to students from across the university, but Jackson M.P.P. students are often recipients. This award provides partial tuition support.
• Kenneth R. Miller, Jr. IR ’02 Grant: Awarded to an active-duty US military officer, with preference given to an Army Foreign Area Officer when applicable. Up to two awards each year are made to M.P.P. students throughout the University.
• Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships (FLAS): Jackson graduate students whose academic work includes foreign language study and whose career plans include teaching, public service or business related to Africa, Europe or the Middle East are encouraged to apply for these fellowships. The fellowships provide $18,000 toward tuition funding and a $15,000 stipend. Only U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the U.S. are eligible. FLAS awards are funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Higher Education Act, Title VI. They are administered through the Council on African Studies, European Studies Council and Council on Middle East Studies at the Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies. M.P.P. students who do not receive funding from the Jackson Institute or Yale University are often recipients of external fellowships from a wide array of sources including the Yellow Ribbon Program, Fulbright, home governments and many others.

Applicants are encouraged to search for external funding through the large number of databases available on the Internet such as FastWeb or Peterson’s. The Association of Professional Schools in International Affairs (APSIA) also maintains a comprehensive list of fellowships and scholarships.

Both the Jackson Institute and the wider Yale community offer numerous paid positions for student work, including teaching fellowships and research and course assistantships.

On-Campus Jobs

Both US and international students are eligible to work on campus earning $12.25-$14.25 per hour for up to 20 hours per week. On campus jobs can be found at: https://www.yalestudentjobs.org/

Course Assistant

Both US and international students are eligible to be a course assistant. In this position, the student assists a Jackson Senior Fellow or faculty member with course planning and administrative details, and can expect to work approximately 10 hours per week at $14.25 per hour. The student does not grade or lead discussions.

Research Assistant

Both US and international students are eligible to be a research assistant. In this position, the student assists a Jackson Senior Fellow or Yale faculty member to conduct research, often times as part of a book project or an ongoing research study. Salaries and work hours per week (no more than 20) are agreed upon between the Senior Fellow/faculty and student.

Teaching Fellowship

Both US and international students are eligible to be a Teaching Fellow not only at Jackson but at departments across the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. As a Teaching Fellow, the student may be expected to grade papers, lead discussion sections, and hold office hours, and will earn either $4,000 (up to 10 hours work/week) or $8,000 (up to 20 hours work/week) per semester.

Loans are available by application through the Graduate School Financial Aid Office for both U.S. and international students.
