Description:
The Brady-Johnson Program in Grand Strategy continues its fall book series with Sulmaan Khan. In his new book, The Struggle for Taiwan: A History of America, China, and the Island Caught Between, Khan offers the first comprehensive history of the triangular relationship between the United States, China, and Taiwan. The book follows the sequence of events that left Taiwan a political anomaly—America’s ambivalent commitment to Taiwan’s defense, China’s bitterness about the separation, and Taiwan’s impressive transformation into a flourishing democracy.
Khan holds the Denison Chair in International History and Chinese Foreign Relations at the Fletcher School, Tufts University. He has written for Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, and The Economist, has been a participant in NIC seminars, and has spoken on China at INDOPACOM. Khan will be in conversation with Arne Westad, director of the Brady-Johnson Program in Grand Strategy and Elihu Professor of History and Global Affairs.
