Description:
Join the Colloquium in International Security Studies for a presentation by Maritime and Naval Affairs Postdoctoral Associate Charles Fawell. A historian of European imperialism, Fawell will present “Half the Battle: Bringing the French Empire West of Suez in the First World War.”
The essay revisits the everyday life of the shipping highways that led west of Suez during World War I, providing a window into the conflict from the perspective of civilian leaders, corporate magnates, and port officials, but also ship-captains, seafarers, and recruits in transit. Tacking between the corridors of power in France and the maritime corridors of the French Empire in the Indo-Pacific, it explores how transportation networks absorbed and diffused the violence of the wider war, and how they nearly broke down in the process.
This event is open to the Yale community; lunch will be provided. Please email kaete.oconnell@yale.edu to receive the reading materials for this colloquium.
