Description:
The Colloquium in International Security Studies concludes its Fall 2024 series with a presentation by Jack H. Guenther, a Henry Chauncey ‘57 Postdoctoral Fellow in the Brady-Johnson Program in Grand Strategy. Guenther specializes in German history, with an interest in globalization and international order. He will present “Private Internationalism in the Interwar Period: The International Acceptance Bank.”
This paper proposes “private internationalism” as an analytic category for making sense of international political economy. Guenther examines attempts by private firms to safeguard Interwar globalization against perceived political instability and argues that this private internationalism outlived the Interwar context. “Private” also refers to the personal ties that, in the aftermath of war and blockade, supplied foundations for putatively impersonal, technical financial transactions.
This event is hosted by the Brady-Johnson Program in Grand Strategy and open to the Yale community. Lunch will be provided. Registered participants will receive the reading materials in advance.
