Description:
The Colloquium in International Security Studies continues its fall programming with a presentation by Kaete O’Connell, Assistant Director of the Brady-Johnson Program in Grand Strategy. A historian of food and foreign relations, she will present, “Brewing Tensions: Bier, GIs, and Civil-Military Dynamics in Postwar Germany.”
The essay argues that U.S. control of the German beer industry during the early years of the occupation was about more than prohibition. The resulting tensions spoke to issues of public health, nutrition, and economic recovery. Coupled with GIs’ tendency to over-indulge, the brewing ban threatened military security.
This event is open to the Yale community, and lunch will be provided. Registered participants will receive the reading materials in advance.
