Alex Bare is a first-year Master in Public Policy (MPP) student at the Jackson School of Global Affairs, where he focuses on armed conflict resolution, illicit economies, human rights, and U.S. foreign policy in Latin America.

Prior to Yale, Alex spent two years as a Program Associate at the Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA), where he covered Colombia, Cuba, Venezuela, and drug policy. In this role, he supported advocacy efforts with U.S. policymakers, conducted field research with partners in conflict-affected regions, organized a congressional delegation to Colombia, and helped coordinate delegations of Afro-Colombian and Indigenous leaders to Washington and the United Nations. He also worked with local human rights defenders during Venezuela’s 2024 presidential elections, producing human rights briefs and analysis pieces on the country’s authoritarian consolidation.

Originally from rural Iowa, Alex graduated summa cum laude with Honors in International Relations and Spanish from the University of Iowa. His undergraduate studies included scholarships for intensive language and cultural programs in Bolivia and Oman, and in 2019, he was awarded a two-year Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship in Barranquilla and Bogotá, Colombia. Alex speaks Spanish, Portuguese, and Arabic at advanced levels, and spent the summer of 2025 studying Bosnian in Sarajevo to expand his regional expertise to the Western Balkans.

After completing his MPP, Alex aims to work at the intersection of U.S. foreign policy and armed conflict resolution, shaping more accountable international engagement. He is currently a member of Foreign Policy for America’s NextGen Initiative.
