Avia Liberman is an Israeli economist pursuing an MPP at the Yale Jackson School of Global Affairs. He aims to return to public service in Israel to help rebuild trust and economic interdependence between Israelis and Palestinians in the aftermath of the ongoing war. His focus is on using economic tools such as infrastructure investment, labor market reform, and NGO-led initiatives to lay the groundwork for sustainable peace.
Prior to Jackson, Avia worked as a researcher at a public policy institute in Tel-Aviv, where he analyzed Israel’s fiscal policy and economic growth. His work focused on identifying market failures and proposing evidence-based solutions in close collaboration with members of the Israeli parliament. He interned at the OECD’s Economics Department, focusing on the war’s economic impact, labor markets, and the rising cost of living. He also served as an economic analyst in the Chief Economist’s Division at Israel’s Ministry of Finance, where he advised the Israeli Security Cabinet on foreign investment policy, sanctions, and trade.
Avia served as both a teaching assistant and research assistant in the Department of Economics at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, where he graduated with distinction from the PPE Honors Program. During his studies, he founded Itutim, Israel’s first academic journal for philosophy, politics, and economics. He was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship for his graduate studies.
At Jackson, Avia is deepening his expertise in applied economics and development policy, focusing on how analysis can inform post-conflict policy design and inclusive growth in the Middle East.
