Daniel Hogestyn is an MPP candidate at the Jackson School of Global Affairs. He currently serves as an active-duty infantry officer in the U.S. Army, with an assignment teaching international relations at West Point following his graduate studies. He most recently served as an airborne infantry company commander in the 82nd Airborne Division.
In 2019, Dan deployed in support of Operation Inherent Resolve, providing security to the Manbij region of northern Syria. This experience early in his career honed his research interest in how states use forward deployed forces to signal commitment and deter revisionist adversaries. Dan’s academic interests are focused on American grand strategy, deterrence, and alliance politics. He plans to explore the relationship between force posture, deterrence, and allied reassurance in the context of NATO’s eastern flank and the western Pacific.
Dan holds a bachelor’s degree from the United States Military Academy in international relations, with a minor in grand strategy as part of the Rupert Johnson Grand Strategy Program at West Point. He is originally from Rochester, New York.
