Poppy Stowell-Evans is a junior at Yale University majoring in history and political science. Originally from Newport, Wales, Poppy’s Welsh upbringing has inspired her lifelong dedication to challenging societal hierarchies and advocating for marginalized voices. Poppy has shown commitment to this aim through work as a climate and women’s rights activist and within the Labour Party. Before attending Yale, she served as chair of the Youth Climate Ambassadors for Wales. She led campaigns on climate justice and displacement, including launching the UK’s first petition to recognize climate refugees. Through this role, she attended COP26 as a Blue Zone delegate where she hosted events, spoke on multiple panels and acted as a "youth reporter" to amplify the youth voice of Wales and promote accessible and unified climate action across all levels of society. As part of this work, she has advised many political and NGO campaigns, including the establishment of the Welsh government’s Cross Party Political Group on Nature and Wellbeing. In 2023, Poppy worked as a parliamentary research intern, contributing to a published dossier on the British government’s mishandling of safe migration routes for Afghan service people who supported the British forces in Afghanistan. She has also campaigned for youth voting rights, advising Welsh Labour on the “Votes at 16” strategy.
At Yale, Poppy’s love for education and international relations is reflected through her commitment to the role of head delegate of Yale’s Model United Nations Team and secretary general and secretariat member of various YMUNs. Her commitment to empowerment and education has also led to her recent appointment as a consent and community educator. She hopes to bring Wales’ enduring spirit of resistance and hope to the Grand Strategy program, with the aim of creating inclusive, lasting change.
