Stephen Coles grew up in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and graduated magna cum laude from
Washington University in St. Louis with a degree in economics. After graduation, he joined the
U.S. Navy and commissioned as a Surface Warfare Officer. Stephen served as the Electronic
and Information Warfare Officer, First Lieutenant, and a Ballistic Missile Defense Officer on the
Spain-based USS Carney. He led sailors on deployments throughout the Mediterranean region,
including operations in the Black Sea and off the coasts of Libya and Syria. More recently,
Stephen served on the USS Wayne E. Meyer as the Fire Control Officer and acting Combat
Systems Officer on deployments to South America and the western Pacific. At Yale, he is
focusing his studies on how emerging technologies impact global security.
