Yale has an extraordinary number of paid teaching and research opportunities for students. International students are eligible for any of these positions.
Teaching Fellows Program
Teaching Fellow (TF) positions are plentiful at Jackson and in other departments at Yale. The TF workload may involve grading papers, leading discussion sections, holding office hours, and keeping up with the assigned readings.
There are two types of TF positions:
- TF-20 ($10,800/semester for up to 15-20 hours of work per week)
- TF-10 positions ($5,400/semester for up to 10 hours of work per week)
Jackson usually has 10-15 TF positions to fill each semester for courses with Jackson faculty and Senior Fellows. The registrar sends out a call for applications each semester and preference for these positions is always given to Jackson students. Many students also reach out, independently, to other departments at Yale to secure TF positions. This past academic year, Jackson students held positions in the following departments/schools:
- Engineering and Applied Science
- Religion
- Women, Gender, Sexuality Studies
- Economics
- School of the Environment
- School of Management
- History of Science and Medicine
- Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations
- Various undergraduate language courses (Persian, Hindi, Chinese, and more)
Research Positions
Research assistants (RA) support faculty members or Jackson Senior Fellows with ongoing research studies, book projects, data analysis projects, and more. RA positions are hourly (rate determined by faculty member and student directly). Students generally seek out RA positions directly with faculty, based on their particular area of interest or focus. Jackson also sends out calls for applications for positions with Jackson faculty and Senior Fellows.
Graders and Tutors
The responsibilities of graders and tutors may include grading exams, papers, homework, or problem sets and meeting with students for office hours. These positions are hourly.
On-Campus Jobs
The general Yale Student Employment Office posts positions available across the University. Most of these positions pay $12.25-$14.25 per hour for up to 20 hours per week. On campus jobs can be found at https://www.yalestudentjobs.org/.
