About Us

The Yale Jackson School of Global Affairs’ Social Innovation Initiative—which launched in 2023—convenes students, practitioners, and scholars working on social innovation to address the world’s most pressing problems.

We define social innovation as finding a novel solution to a complex social problem that is more effective, efficient, sustainable, or just than existing solutions, disrupts the status quo, and creates value on a societal rather than individual level.

What We Do

At SII, we’re on a mission to unite Jackson community members passionate about social innovation and impact. This encompasses a range of activities including:

  • Community Building: From mixers to guest speakers, we orchestrate events that bring our SII community closer together to build meaningful connections.
  • Resource Navigation: Our personalized advising helps Jackson School students navigate Yale’s vast resources, ensuring they can make the most out of their time here.
  • Course Offerings: The Jackson School offers electives on social innovation taught by our faculty members, in addition to cross-listed courses from across the university.
  • Changemaking Opportunities: SII links students to projects with social enterprises, startups, nonprofits, and more, so they can turn their passion into action.
  • Community Expansion: We help Jackson School students find and connect with alumni, World Fellows and Senior Fellows, faculty, and those who are practicing social innovation in their career.
  • Integration with the Yale Ecosystem: SII provides a gateway to social innovation at Yale. We facilitate community with Yale’s key innovation programs and centers, opening doors to opportunities for students.
